How to Be a Better Vlogger

VloggerVideo blogging offers a new way to connect with readers and followers while sharing personality and grabbing attention. It’s an effective method for connecting with target audiences that deserves some exploration if you’re looking to add a little something extra to your current blogging efforts – whether on your own or on behalf of a specific brand.

As many bloggers have yet to jump into video blogging, with excuses ranging from introversion to a lack of time or equipment, now is a better time than ever to get ahead of the pack. Take the time to learn how simple video blogging really is and follow the steps below to become the best vlogger you can be.

Tips to Become a Successful Vlogger

Vlogger tips

Use the Right Equipment

Notice this subheading doesn’t say use the “best” or “most” equipment; it says use the “right equipment” for a reason. As long as your videos are clear and the sound is captured without interference, you have what you need. Whether you use a smart phone ora webcam (which can be purchased relatively inexpensively), as long as the video is not fuzzy, you’re fine.

The right equipment ensures your videos look clean. Use a tripod for a smart phone or video camera, or balance the webcam on a solid desk to be sure there is no shaking. If the sound isn’t what you’d like it to be, invest in a computer microphone or enhancer for your phone. With the bare essentials, you’ll be set to create quality videos in no time.

Think Through What You Have to Say

A video blog that lacks the necessary editing of written text doesn’t mean a vlogger has a license to ramble. Just as you would for a regular blog post, think through the message you’d like to share and how you’ll do it. Make an outline, practice your talking points and avoid straying off subject. Think about effective conversation tools and put them to work; consider your audience at all times.

For example, if your topic is legal online gambling, feel free to share examples of sites that permit the practice, but avoid using too many anecdotal stories and fillers. If something is not essential or directly related to your central message, don’t include it. Preparing beforehand protects your credibility and better enables you to captivate the interest of your viewers.
Keep It Short

We live in a busy world. Your attention, along with the attention of your readers, is constantly being pulled in a million different directions. From real-life responsibilities to social networks and advertisements, you have a lot of competition any time you’re trying to share a message.Unfortunately, using video doesn’t make you immune to this. No one has time to open a video message and watch it for 10 minutes; that’s a precious amount of time that could hinder productiveness.

Most research indicates that for a message to keep the attention of its viewers with maximum impact, it should be 180 seconds – 3 minutes – or less. Just like certain word counts are most effective for text posts, certain lengths are optimal for video posts.

Film in the Right Location

Bad lighting, background distractions or questionable locations can ruin a video blog’s effectiveness and the reputation of the blogger. Set up a standard location for your video blog posts. Choose a space with a clean background that represents you as a blogger. If you’re a fitness blogger, consider a space with equipment or mats in the background. If you’re more of a technical blogger, think about finding a space with a white board or projector to help prove specific points.

Proper lighting is essential. Try to find a space with an abundance of natural light. When this is not possible, consider investing in an affordable lighting kit, especially if this is something you hope to make a regular part of your blogging efforts. Try a few angles to see what works best.

As with all blogging initiatives, remember it might take some time to get it right. Don’t be afraid to re-record, to ask for feedback and to try a variety of options before moving forward. Eventually, you’ll find what works best for you and what your readers respond to. Stick with it, and it will become second nature in no time. The time to add video blogging to your blogging efforts is now!
